That's a phrase that has always baffled me. If I had stolen a car, I would make sure to flawlessly obey every single traffic law while keeping it a tad below the speed limit.

"Drive it like you stole it and now they're onto you and you're going back to jail and your only chance is if you somehow make the 5% odds of getting away before they scramble enough Smokies, so floor it" doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

Ha! Nice. I guess it should be "Drive it like you stole it, and also don't care to keep the car long-term or whether or not you'll be incarcerated."
It has a nice ring to it...

I think the point is that you wouldn't care about taking care of it because it isn't yours. Pretty much the same way people tend to hoon rental cars.

I've always preferred to "drive it like an insured rental"

Dude is in 4 stars of trouble, he certainly won't be respecting any laws.
That said, my employers truck got stolen a couple weeks back and the person went on a joy ride speeding fast enough that law enforcement weren't legally allowed to pursue. He ripped through town a few times before ditching the truck in a field and taking off on the sled in the back.
A few days later the sled was found about an hour out of town. The theif managed to roll it, then ditched it.

That's why "beat it like a rented mule" is the superior cliche.

Nope, just have two of my own. Unfortunately, our 5 year old has sleeping habits like me. Which means she does not sleep much at night. But at least now I have someone to talk to while I'm wide awake at 2:30 in the morning.

Were the police chasing him exclusively downhill?

My kids are well beyond the baby age, but your observation is spot on. It's rare, though, that we go a night without at least one of the three climbing into our bed. They know better than to try to get in on my side, though.

Our oldest does not do that now, and never has. The younger 5 year old does though, but only in the morning when we should be getting up anyway. When she wakes up at night, she just comes into our bedroom to declare that she is awake and either needs some one to put her back to bed, or get a snack, because she doesn't eat at normal hours like a regular human being.

lol whoops, sorry :] English is my second language. Plus, I hardly have ever spent anytime on computers before I started working in the parts department. Not use to typing or any long times on them lol. And i'm only 27 lol!! I use to do more of those "tank & spank" scenarios when i was at Lexus, we took in more used car to perform inspections more so than here at my current dealer. I was the IS-F guy when they first came out because nobody want to get paid on a learning curve. The shop foreman had me tank and spank many a IS-F. Also, when we were low on Lexus work, we took used car inspection R.O.'s. I remember on my birthday of all times, I took in a Cayman S, a regular C6 Corvette (both regular checks and test drives) and a black Ford GT for a K40 radar installation. Had to fill up the tank and drive that thing for about 2 hours. That was a good day.

I think it makes perfect sense. While smart people who steal cars make sure they aren't seen, the dumbasses are the ones joyriding the hell out of it and usually end up utterly destroying it. I guess a better term would be drive it like you rented it because everyone knows the fastest car out there is a rental. You want to just hammer it but you make sure you get it back in one piece. I experienced this recently with a town and country I had to rent. There some who said you couldn't thrash around a minivan, conveniently for me TC was broken and it had a bad alignment. It was as bland as it could come but I did that van justice and pushed it harder than it probably had been pushed before. I hated the thing completely but by god do I have respect for it, 600 miles a snowstorm and me trying to get the most out of the V-6 as I could, I have to give credit to it.

I also don't get the whole "rental car is fastest car" thing. If I'm driving a vehicle that I don't own, you can bet that I'm gonna be freaking careful with it!
